About This Basic Calculator

This is a clean, functional four-function calculator supporting addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division. It works exactly like a standard handheld calculator — enter a number, choose an operation, enter another number, and press equals. The display shows the current value and the previous operand and operation are shown above for reference.

Special buttons: AC (All Clear) resets everything to zero. +/− toggles the current number between positive and negative. % divides the displayed number by 100, converting it to a decimal for percentage calculations (e.g., 8 → 0.08 for use as an 8% rate).

Common Uses for a Basic Calculator

A basic calculator handles the vast majority of everyday arithmetic: splitting bills, calculating discounts, checking change, adding up expenses, calculating unit prices, working out basic tax amounts, and any other situation where you need quick arithmetic without specialized formulas. For percentage calculations, tip calculations, or financial planning, our specialized calculators on this site handle those with dedicated interfaces designed for each task.

Order of Operations

This calculator operates sequentially, like most basic handheld calculators — it does NOT follow algebraic order of operations (PEMDAS). If you enter 2 + 3 × 4, it computes (2+3)×4 = 20, not 2+(3×4) = 14. For calculations requiring true order of operations, use our Scientific Calculator which evaluates expressions in the standard mathematical order. For most everyday arithmetic, sequential operation is exactly what you want.

Tips for Accurate Calculations

Double-check your entry before pressing equals on important calculations. Use the % key for tip and discount calculations (enter the bill amount, press ×, enter the tip percentage, press %, press =). For running totals, keep adding to the previous result by pressing the operation key after equals rather than clearing. Pressing AC before starting a fresh calculation ensures no leftover values affect your result.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why does my answer have many decimal places?

Floating-point arithmetic in computers occasionally produces results like 0.30000000000000004 instead of 0.3 due to how binary number systems represent decimals. This calculator rounds results to 10 significant digits to minimize this, but very complex calculations may occasionally show minor precision artifacts. For financial calculations requiring exact penny amounts, the result is rounded to standard display precision.

Can I use keyboard input?

Standard browser keyboard input typically works — number keys, operators (+, -, *, /), Enter for equals, and Escape or Delete for clearing. The exact keyboard behavior depends on your browser and operating system.

What is the maximum number this calculator can handle?

JavaScript numbers support values up to approximately 1.8 × 10^308. For practical purposes, this calculator handles any number you're likely to encounter in everyday use. Very large numbers are displayed in scientific notation automatically by the browser.

How do I calculate a percentage with this calculator?

Method 1: To find 20% of 85, enter 85 × 20 % = (result: 17). Method 2: To add 15% tip to $42, enter 42 × 15 % + 42 = or use our dedicated Tip Calculator for a more convenient interface.

Is this calculator accurate for financial calculations?

For standard arithmetic, yes. For complex financial modeling, use our specialized calculators (mortgage, compound interest, investment) which are designed and tested specifically for those use cases and display results in the appropriate format.
